SRINAGAR: Two young sisters succumbed to snakebite injuries on Sunday in Manma Barmari village, located in the Kalakote subdivision of Rajouri district, Jammu and Kashmir, according to local officials.
The Chenab Times has learned that the tragic incident occurred while the two girls, identified as Amiba, aged five, and Amiza, aged three, were sleeping in a room with other family members. A snake reportedly appeared on their bed and bit both of them.
Following the bites, the sisters were immediately rushed to a local hospital to receive medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, both children passed away due to the venomous snake’s bite.
Officials stated that an investigation into the incident has been initiated to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the snake’s entry into the house and the events leading to the unfortunate deaths. The village is situated in a region where encounters with venomous reptiles are not uncommon, particularly during warmer months.
Snakebite deaths, especially among children, highlight ongoing public health challenges in rural and semi-urban areas of the region, emphasizing the need for timely access to medical facilities and awareness campaigns regarding snake safety. The local administration has reportedly reached out to the affected family to offer support.
