In a significant development for freight transportation in Jammu and Kashmir, the Jammu railways division has successfully dispatched its first-ever rail consignment of cement from Kathua to Anantnag. This marks a crucial step towards enhancing internal freight movement within the region and underscores a growing reliance on the railway network for commercial transport.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the maiden consignment, comprising approximately 66 tonnes of cement packed in 1,320 bags, was booked by Ganpati Cement and loaded at Shaheed Captain Sunil Kumar Choudhary Kathua railway station. The historic dispatch took place on Monday, destined for the Anantnag goods shed.
Until now, cement intended for the Kashmir Valley was predominantly transported via road. Railway officials highlighted that this is the first instance of a new commodity like cement being moved internally within the Jammu Division via rail. The establishment of this new origin-destination pair is anticipated to offer a more economical, secure, and expedited method for transporting construction materials to the Kashmir Valley. Furthermore, it is expected to boost freight revenue for the Indian Railways and promote environmentally friendly transportation practices.
Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, described the achievement as a new milestone in rail freight transportation for Jammu and Kashmir. He noted that while cement had previously been received as inward traffic at major railway stations such as Shaheed Captain Tushar Mahajan Station, Kathua, and Anantnag, the outward loading of cement has now been successfully initiated due to the sustained efforts and robust logistics management of the Jammu Division.
Singhal further elaborated that this development reflects a rising confidence among the industrial community in Jammu and Kashmir regarding the capabilities of the railway network. He expressed optimism that this initiative will provide a fresh impetus to economic activities across the region. The Jammu division intends to continue its efforts to connect more traders and organizations with the Railways, aiming to establish it as a more cost-effective, dependable, and eco-friendly transportation solution for the business community.
The successful movement of cement via rail is expected to streamline logistics for construction projects in the Kashmir Valley, potentially reducing transit times and costs.
