Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nainar Nagenthran has called for the arrest of functionaries from the Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK) over the alleged creation of Vinayagar idols that bear a resemblance to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin.
The Chenab Times has learned that Mr. Nagenthran, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Tirunelveli constituency, expressed strong disapproval of the idols, asserting that they were intended for political publicity and aimed at promoting an individual. He stated that such actions demean the religious sentiments of millions of people who revere and worship Lord Vinayagar.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the BJP leader emphasised that religious icons, which are deeply revered and have been worshipped for centuries, should not be exploited for political gains. He argued that using religious figures to promote individual leaders or political parties amounts to a desecration of spiritual beliefs and practices.
Mr. Nagenthran highlighted that the purpose of worship is spiritual and devotional, intended to connect devotees with the divine. He expressed concern that the actions of the TVK functionaries were a deliberate attempt to trivialise religious devotion and use it as a tool for political leverage. The MLA condemned the practice as an insult to the sanctity of religious icons and the faith of the populace.
The alleged incident has sparked debate and concern among religious and political circles in Tamil Nadu.
