Chennai: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has demanded that the Tamil Nadu government release a white paper detailing the outcomes of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s recent visit to London. The opposition party seeks comprehensive information regarding the MoUs signed, their projected timelines, and the anticipated job creation stemming from the trip.
The Chenab Times has learned that the AIADMK is particularly scrutinizing the purported investments secured during the Chief Minister’s overseas engagements. Questions have been raised about the necessity of an international trip for deals that could potentially be finalized within Tamil Nadu, especially when taxpayer money is involved. The party contends that many of the companies involved in the announced MoUs are already well-established and headquartered in India, with significant existing operations in the state.
Senior AIADMK leader R.B. Udhayakumar has publicly questioned the true purpose of Chief Minister Vijay’s six-day London visit, suggesting it may have been more geared towards enhancing his political image rather than solely attracting investments. Udhayakumar pointed to the scarcity of details regarding meetings with industrialists and concrete investment commitments, noting that a significant MoU was announced only after opposition leaders and economic experts voiced concerns about the lack of clarity. He also raised objections to the chief minister traveling to the UK to sign an agreement with a company headquartered in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, which already operates 32 plants in Tamil Nadu, arguing such an agreement could have been finalized in Chennai.
Furthermore, the AIADMK has highlighted the absence of the Industries Minister from the delegation, while other ministers not directly associated with investment promotion, such as the Sports Minister, accompanied the Chief Minister. Concerns have also been voiced regarding the transparency of the expenditure incurred on the trip and the individuals who joined the Chief Minister.
Adding to the controversy, photographs of Chief Minister Vijay at the Silverstone motor racing circuit alongside actor Ajith Kumar have drawn criticism. Opposition parties, including the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and various Left parties, have questioned the transparency and primary objective of the trip, with some suggesting that the Chief Minister’s presence at the racing event was more aligned with personal interests than official duties.
While the government has described the visit as an initiative to attract investments in advanced manufacturing, electric vehicles, electronics, and Global Capability Centres, opposition parties remain skeptical. They argue that the duration of the trip, reportedly six days, seems excessive for the investment-seeking activities that could have been concluded much sooner. This prolonged stay has fueled suspicions that the trip may have included undisclosed personal engagements, thereby leading to a wasteful expenditure of public funds.
The AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan specifically criticized the decision to travel to the UK for investment promotion from companies already established in India, questioning the rationale behind using taxpayers’ money for such purposes. He suggested that the entire exercise appeared to be a performance to deflect criticism regarding the Chief Minister’s other activities.
The DMK has also voiced its concerns, with spokesperson TKS Elangovan accusing Chief Minister Vijay of misleading the public. He stated that an official trip would typically involve a publicly announced schedule, and the lack of transparency surrounding Vijay’s itinerary suggested a separate, undisclosed agenda. Other DMK leaders have echoed these sentiments, claiming that false information is being disseminated regarding the MoUs signed.
Amidst the political sparring, an MoU was highlighted on September 14, 2026, signed in London between Samvardhana Motherson International Ltd. and Guidance, Tamil Nadu, for an investment of approximately ₹11,000 crore in the state. This investment is projected to create around 7,000 employment opportunities in various sectors, including design, engineering, manufacturing, assembly, and logistics. However, the opposition continues to press for greater transparency and verifiable details surrounding all such agreements.
The controversy underscores a broader debate regarding the efficacy and transparency of high-profile foreign trips undertaken by state leaders for investment promotion. The opposition parties are demanding clarity not only on the financial commitments but also on the strategic necessity and cost-effectiveness of such international visits.
The Tamil Nadu government has stated that the visit was aimed at understanding the scale, technology, management, and capabilities required for international motor races, with the potential to expand opportunities for Indian talent. However, critics remain unconvinced, emphasizing the need for accountability and a clear demonstration of tangible benefits to the state’s economy.
