SRINAGAR: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader and MLA from Pulwama, Waheed-ur-Rehman Para, has submitted a resolution to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, calling for the central government to initiate a meaningful and sustained political process in the Union Territory.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the resolution, addressed to the Secretary of the Legislative Assembly, urges the Government of India to take a significant step towards reconciliation by offering a one-time, comprehensive amnesty to individuals affected by years of conflict.
The MLA highlighted the need for a humanitarian review of cases involving young individuals who may have been misguided, caught in circumstances beyond their control, or continue to face legal and administrative restrictions long after the events have transpired. He emphasized that no young person should be permanently marked by suspicion due to past allegations, cases, or the prevailing conflict conditions.
Para’s resolution calls for a time-bound review of eligible cases, including those impacting passports, security clearances, education, and employment, ensuring due process and necessary safeguards for serious offenses. He stated that peace cannot be fostered by keeping an entire generation entangled in the past.
The resolution further articulates that the youth of Jammu and Kashmir must be afforded the opportunity to study, work, travel, support their families, and rebuild their lives with dignity. It frames this not as a plea for forgetting past transgressions but as a call for justice tempered with compassion, accountability with humanity, and peace with dignity.
The legislative body, through the resolution, is asked to acknowledge that the time has arrived to transition from an atmosphere of fear to one of trust, from exclusion to opportunity, and from conflict to reconciliation. MLA Para added that history will judge whether the region chose to perpetuate past wounds or demonstrated the courage to heal them.
The PDP leader’s move signifies a renewed push from within the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir for dialogue and forward-looking policies aimed at addressing the long-standing issues affecting its population, particularly the youth.
