Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Saturday convened a high-level meeting to review the state’s preparedness for the impending Northeast monsoon and stepped-up measures for the prevention and control of dengue fever.
The Chenab Times has learned that the Chief Minister emphasized the need for proactive measures to mitigate potential challenges posed by the monsoon, which typically brings heavy rainfall to the southern districts of the state.
During the meeting, Mr. Stalin instructed officials to meticulously identify areas that are prone to seawater intrusion and coastal erosion during the monsoon season. He stressed the importance of ensuring that weather and storm warnings are effectively disseminated to fishermen and that rehabilitation centres are adequately prepared to handle any exigencies.
The Chief Minister also reviewed the ongoing efforts to control the spread of dengue, a mosquito-borne viral infection that often sees an increase in cases during the rainy season. He directed the health department to intensify surveillance, public awareness campaigns, and vector control activities across all districts.
Officials presented a comprehensive report on the current status of preparedness, detailing measures such as the desilting of drains, strengthening of coastal defenses, and the stock-piling of essential relief materials. The Chief Minister sought detailed information on the availability of medical teams, medicines, and other healthcare resources in flood-prone and dengue-affected regions.
The administration has been working to improve its disaster management capabilities, learning from past experiences to ensure a more robust response to natural calamities. The focus remains on safeguarding lives and property, with particular attention paid to vulnerable communities residing in coastal and low-lying areas.
Specific directives were issued for the coordinated functioning of various government departments, including revenue, disaster management, public works, health, and local administration, to ensure seamless relief and rescue operations if required. The Chief Minister underscored the need for real-time monitoring and swift decision-making during the monsoon period.
In anticipation of the monsoon, which is expected to commence in October, the state government has also initiated preliminary work on infrastructure repairs and enhancements. This includes reinforcing embankments, clearing waterways, and ensuring the functionality of drainage systems in urban and rural areas alike.
The review meeting was attended by senior government officials, including the Chief Secretary, secretaries of relevant departments, and district collectors who joined virtually. The proactive approach aims to minimize the impact of the monsoon and ensure the well-being of the state’s population.
