Bhupesh Kumar Gupta has taken charge as the new Head of the Department of Biotechnology at Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry in Nauni, Solan district, Himachal Pradesh. His appointment brings over two decades of professional experience in plant pathology, with specialized expertise in the management of diseases affecting fruit and vegetable crops, as well as biological disease control methods.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that Professor Gupta’s research interests are centered on plant disease epidemiology, the development of sustainable disease management strategies, and the utilization of beneficial microorganisms such as ‘trichoderma’ to mitigate reliance on synthetic fungicides. This focus aligns with the university’s broader objectives in promoting environmentally conscious agricultural practices.

Professor Gupta’s career at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Kinnaur, located at Reckong Peo, began in July 2006. During his tenure there, he gained comprehensive research and practical field experience across all four distinct agroclimatic zones of Himachal Pradesh. This exposure provided him with a deep understanding of cultivation challenges and innovations related to both temperate and subtropical fruit crops, along with various vegetable varieties.

Prior to his current role, Professor Gupta was instrumental at the Regional Horticultural Research and Training Station in Dhaula Kuan, Paonta Sahib. His work there involved the study and development of subtropical fruit crops, including litchi, citrus, guava, and strawberry. He also made significant contributions to the field of capsicum breeding, notably in the creation of new hybrids through the application of male-sterile lines, a key advancement in crop improvement techniques.

The Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, situated in Nauni, Solan, is a key institution dedicated to advancing horticultural science and forestry education and research in Himachal Pradesh. Its establishment aimed to cater to the specific horticultural needs of the region, fostering agricultural development through academic excellence and practical application. The university plays a crucial role in training future agricultural scientists and implementing research findings for the benefit of farmers.

The Department of Biotechnology at the university is a vital component, focusing on the application of biological sciences to agricultural challenges. Its initiatives often involve exploring novel methods for crop protection, yield enhancement, and the development of disease-resistant varieties. Professor Gupta’s extensive background in plant pathology and biological control is expected to further strengthen the department’s research capabilities and educational programs in these critical areas. The university aims to leverage biotechnological tools for sustainable agriculture, addressing issues like climate change and resource management.

Himachal Pradesh, known for its diverse agroclimatic conditions, presents unique opportunities and challenges for horticulture. The state’s economy is significantly dependent on its agricultural output, with fruits and vegetables forming a substantial part of its produce. Institutions like the Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry are central to supporting and enhancing the state’s agricultural sector through research, extension services, and the development of skilled manpower. Professor Gupta’s appointment is anticipated to bring new impetus to the department’s work in addressing these regional agricultural priorities.
