New Delhi: The Delhi government has launched an Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) aimed at real-time monitoring of pollution-generating activities across the national capital. The initiative, spearheaded by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), utilizes advanced technology to track sources of pollution more effectively.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the newly established ICCC is equipped with artificial intelligence-enabled CCTV cameras and GPS tracking systems. These technologies are designed to provide immediate alerts and comprehensive data on activities that contribute to air pollution within Delhi.

The ICCC will monitor over 700 identified construction sites, which are often significant contributors to dust and particulate matter pollution. The AI-powered cameras are programmed to detect non-compliance with environmental norms at these sites, such as inadequate dust suppression measures or unauthorized debris burning. Officials stated that the system is expected to enhance the efficiency of regulatory oversight.

In addition to construction sites, the centre will also track road sweeping operations through GPS-enabled vehicles. This allows authorities to verify the frequency and coverage of mechanical road sweeping, a measure implemented to reduce suspended particulate matter from roads. The data collected will be crucial for assessing the impact of these sanitation efforts and ensuring accountability.

The operationalisation of the ICCC marks a significant step in Delhi’s ongoing efforts to combat severe air pollution, particularly during the winter months when pollution levels typically surge. The centre’s integrated approach is intended to provide a centralized platform for data analysis, enabling a more strategic and responsive approach to pollution control.

Environmental experts have often cited construction dust, vehicular emissions, and biomass burning as major contributors to Delhi’s poor air quality. The new command centre aims to address these issues by providing actionable intelligence to enforcement agencies. The data generated is expected to inform policy decisions and targeted interventions to mitigate pollution.

The DPCC, under the purview of the Environment Department of the Delhi government, has been tasked with the operation and maintenance of the ICCC. The centre will serve as a hub for consolidating data from various environmental monitoring stations and field inspections. This will allow for a holistic view of the pollution landscape in Delhi.

Officials indicated that the system is designed to be dynamic, with capabilities to be expanded to include monitoring of other potential pollution sources in the future. The government hopes that the real-time tracking and enhanced enforcement will lead to a measurable improvement in air quality and create a healthier living environment for the city’s residents. The implementation of such technological solutions is seen as vital in the fight against pervasive urban pollution challenges faced by the capital.
