The Andhra Pradesh government is set to consider a proposal for the establishment of a media commission, according to Minister Kondapalli Srinivas. The statement was made amidst ongoing discussions and demands related to media policies and regulations within the state.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Minister Kondapalli Srinivas, who holds portfolios including Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and NRI Empowerment & Relations, indicated the government’s willingness to examine the proposal. While specific details of the proposed commission were not immediately available, the announcement comes at a time when various stakeholders, including journalists, have been advocating for improved media oversight and support mechanisms.
Recent reports and discussions in Andhra Pradesh have highlighted a growing emphasis on regulating social media and addressing issues such as misinformation and harmful content. Earlier in October 2025, the state government had constituted a Group of Ministers (GoM) tasked with overseeing social media regulations, studying international best practices, and recommending measures to ensure platform accountability. This GoM includes ministers such as Nara Lokesh, Y Satya Kumar Yadav, Nadendla Manohar, Kolusu Parthasarathy, and Vangalapudi Anitha. The focus of this group is on tackling misinformation, harmful content, and protecting citizen rights.
Furthermore, in March 2026, journalists had rallied in Vijayawada, raising several demands, including the establishment of a media commission, allocation of house sites, implementation of pension facilities, and the formation of a governing council for the Media Academy. Minister for Housing and Information and Public Relations, Kolusu Parthasarathy, had then assured the journalists that the government was favourable to their issues and that these would be brought to the attention of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. He had also indicated plans for health insurance continuation and enhancing the journalists’ welfare fund.
The current administration, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, has been focusing on several key areas, including attracting investments, strengthening welfare schemes, and addressing societal issues. In July 2026, the Andhra Pradesh Cabinet approved measures to curb social media misuse, including the formation of a State-level Social Media Response Cell and a Task Force to monitor hate speech. They also approved investment proposals worth approximately ₹31,431 crore, aimed at generating significant employment opportunities.
The potential media commission, if established, could encompass a broad range of functions aimed at fostering a responsible and sustainable media ecosystem in Andhra Pradesh. This could include setting standards for journalistic conduct, addressing grievances, and potentially providing a framework for the welfare and accreditation of media professionals. The government’s engagement with such proposals indicates a proactive approach to the evolving media landscape and its impact on society and governance.
Kondapalli Srinivas’s statement suggests a positive reception to the idea of a media commission, aligning with broader governmental efforts to ensure accountability and facilitate constructive dialogue across all sectors, including the press. The government’s focus on both regulating potentially harmful online content and supporting the media fraternity indicates a dual approach to navigating the complexities of modern communication in Andhra Pradesh.
