Governor of Himachal Pradesh, Kavinder Gupta, on Friday inaugurated the ‘Sankalp Rath Yatra’, a significant anti-drug awareness campaign spearheaded by the Utishtha Bharat Sewa Trust. The initiative aims to galvanize a unified societal effort to shield the younger generation from the pervasive threat of drug abuse.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Governor, addressing the gathering in Kasauli, a town renowned for its natural splendor, tranquil ambiance, and rich military legacy, emphasized that the locale should be celebrated for its tourism potential rather than becoming associated with drug-related issues. He underscored the critical need for heightened vigilance, particularly in tourist hubs and areas bordering other states or nations, to curb drug trafficking and prevent its destructive influence on the youth and the region’s social fabric.

Governor Gupta highlighted the alarming impact of drug abuse on young individuals, urging parents and educators to maintain a keen awareness of behavioural changes in children. He stressed the importance of patient listening, open communication, and providing consistent family support as crucial elements in safeguarding youth.

The Governor articulated that drug abuse transcends a mere law-and-order concern, representing a profound social and health crisis that impacts individuals, families, and their future prospects. He advocated for a comprehensive response that integrates stringent enforcement measures against traffickers and organized crime syndicates with robust treatment, rehabilitation, and social reintegration programs for those affected by addiction.

Governor Gupta noted that drug trafficking often intertwines with organized criminal networks, occasionally extending to cross-border operations, thereby elevating it to a matter of national security and sovereign interest. While commending the dedicated efforts of the police, security forces, administrative bodies, and investigative agencies, he stressed that governmental actions alone are insufficient. He called for a more substantial and active participation from the broader community to effectively combat this menace.

He further proposed the implementation of regular counselling sessions in educational institutions, the promotion of active engagement in sports, yoga, and cultural pursuits, the development of vocational skills, and fostering positive interactions with students. According to the Governor, schools should serve as the primary line of defense in preventing drug abuse among students.

Additionally, Governor Gupta appealed to the Cantonment Board, Army personnel, and various institutions present in Kasauli to lend their valuable experience and disciplined approach to the campaign. He extended a call to action to religious and spiritual organizations, women’s and youth groups, educational establishments, and civil society at large, urging them to join forces with the ‘Sankalp Rath Yatra’ initiative.

Addressing the youth directly, the Governor implored them to reject drugs and encouraged them to channel their energy constructively into sports, education, skill development, and contributing to nation-building activities. He also took the opportunity to honor individuals who have rendered outstanding services to society.

The launch event was attended by Member of Parliament Suresh Kashyap, Member of the Legislative Assembly Vinod Sultanpuri, Sister Tesvin, Principal of St Mary’s School, and other distinguished personalities who lent their support to the cause.
