Amritsar Rural Police have dismantled an alleged illegal arms and explosives supply network, leading to the arrest of one individual and the recovery of a significant cache of weaponry. The seizure included an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, live cartridges, and two hand grenades.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav announced the development via a post on the social media platform X. He indicated that preliminary investigations suggest the arrested individual was connected to foreign-based smugglers and was involved in the procurement of illicit firearms. The accused has been identified as Babba, a resident of Cheema Khurd village in Tarn Taran district.

This operation marks the second instance in four days where the Amritsar rural police have recovered an assault rifle. On September 30, the police had seized an AK-47, an AK-56, four magazines, live cartridges, and over 10 kilograms of heroin from three individuals. Those arrested in the earlier operation were identified as Sandeep Singh, 32, from Bharar village, his wife Kamaljit Kaur, and his brother-in-law Vikramjit Singh, 23, from Ghumanpura.

A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered at the Gharinda police station. The charges invoked are under the relevant sections of the Arms Act and the Explosive Substances Act. Authorities are currently conducting further investigations to identify the full extent of the network, including tracing its backward and forward linkages to fully understand the operational scope and origins of the illicit arms and explosives.

The recovery highlights ongoing concerns regarding the illegal arms trade and the potential for such weapons to fall into the wrong hands. Law enforcement agencies across the region are actively working to disrupt these supply chains and prevent the proliferation of illegal weaponry. The investigation aims to uncover the entire chain of command and distribution, potentially leading to further arrests and seizures. The focus on foreign linkages suggests a broader international dimension to the arms smuggling operation.

The timely intervention by the Amritsar Rural Police has prevented a potentially dangerous consignment of weapons from entering circulation. The recovered items, particularly the AK-47 rifle and hand grenades, are classified as high-threat weapons. The police’s commitment to tackling the illegal arms trade is demonstrated through their persistent efforts and successful operations in the region.

Sources within the police department indicated that the investigation is ongoing and that more details are expected to emerge as the inquiry progresses. The dismantling of such networks is considered crucial for maintaining public safety and security. The recovery underscores the persistent challenges posed by cross-border arms smuggling and the need for continuous vigilance and robust intelligence gathering.
