Mithapur, a village in Punjab renowned for its contribution to Indian hockey, is abuzz with celebrations following the Indian women’s hockey team’s gold medal triumph at the recent Asian Games. This historic victory, achieved after 44 years, marks a significant milestone not only for the sport but also for the village that has consistently produced national and international level players.

Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the joy in Mithapur is amplified by the fact that the Indian men’s hockey team also secured a gold medal at the same event, creating a rare and historic double celebration for the village. The dual victories have brought immense pride to the community, with families of players expressing profound happiness and a sense of shared accomplishment.

A Village Steeped in Hockey Tradition

Mithapur’s connection to hockey is deeply ingrained in its identity. The village has been a fertile ground for nurturing hockey talent for decades, with many of its residents having represented India at various international levels. The recent Asian Games success is seen as a culmination of this enduring legacy and a testament to the dedication and hard work of its players.

Manjit Kaur, mother of former Indian hockey captain Manpreet Singh and a former hockey player herself, articulated the village’s sentiment, stating that the women’s team’s victory holds special significance. She noted that while the men’s team has achieved success multiple times, the girls bringing home the gold medal after such a long wait fills the community with unparalleled pride. Her words, translated from Punjabi, convey a deep sense of satisfaction and vindication for the women’s team’s efforts.

Udita Duhan, wife of prominent player Mandeep Singh and an Olympian herself, shared the excitement, highlighting the double celebration for Mithapur. She pointed out that the victories are especially meaningful given that Mandeep Singh also achieved his 300th cap and Manpreet Singh became the most-capped player for the Indian men’s team. Duhan expressed particular joy over the women’s team’s Asian gold, calling it a long-cherished dream finally realized, which also secured berths for both teams in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Historic Asian Games Feat

The Asian Games 2026 witnessed a remarkable confluence of success for Indian hockey, with both the men’s and women’s teams clinching gold medals. This marked the first time in the history of the games that both Indian hockey teams achieved this feat simultaneously. The women’s team’s victory after a 44-year drought and the men’s team’s continued dominance underscore a golden era for Indian hockey.

The twin triumphs are not just seen as isolated events but as a reflection of a sustained effort and a growing hockey ecosystem within Mithapur. This year’s achievements have further energized the village, fostering a renewed sense of community and shared passion for the sport.

Emergence of Women’s Hockey and Coaching Initiatives

A significant development highlighted by the recent events is the burgeoning role of women in hockey within Mithapur. Udita Duhan’s initiative to coach young students, including girls, in the nuances of international hockey is seen as a crucial step towards inclusivity and grassroots development. Traditionally, the hockey fields in Mithapur have been dominated by male players, making Duhan’s involvement a pioneering effort.

The sight of former and current players’ families closely following and fervently supporting the women’s matches, mirroring the intensity with which they watch the men’s games, demonstrates a shift in perspective and growing appreciation for the women’s team. This shared enthusiasm, with villagers engaging in lively discussions and celebrating every goal, further cements the community’s support for all its hockey players.

The Legacy and Future of Mithapur Hockey

The foundation for the current generation of hockey stars from Mithapur, including Manpreet and Mandeep, was reportedly laid by the players from the same 2016 junior hockey batch. This enduring legacy, where past successes inspire future generations, is a hallmark of the village’s sporting culture. Contemporaries such as Olympian Varun Kumar, Talwinder Singh, and Prabhdeep have also emerged from this dedicated pool of talent.

Coach Balwinder Singh, an FIH Level 3 coach and a technical official with Hockey India, who has been instrumental in training students in Mithapur, lauded the village’s hockey legacy. He credited the inspiration provided by former hockey player and former Director Sports, Punjab, Pargat Singh, for fostering the initial growth of players like Manpreet and Mandeep. Singh noted that while hard work has always been a constant for men’s hockey, the breakthrough for the women’s team has been a long-awaited moment, making this year’s celebrations particularly joyous.

Singh also highlighted that Mithapur currently has 11 players in various academies, indicating a high success rate in developing skilled hockey players from the village. The proactive planning by the Hockey Club president, Amrik Powar, to further develop opportunities for Mithapur’s girls signifies a commitment to nurturing future talent and ensuring that the village continues to be a powerhouse of Indian hockey.
