Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir: Two landmines were detected and subsequently destroyed by the Indian Army in the Mendhar sector of Poonch district, situated along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. The discovery and destruction operation took place on Monday, according to official sources.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that Army troops encountered the explosive devices during a routine patrolling mission near the border fence at Basooni Top. The landmines were spotted around 9:50 AM. Following the detection, the area was immediately cordoned off by the security forces to ensure public safety and prevent any untoward incidents.

The Army’s Bomb Disposal Squad was subsequently called to the location. They carried out a controlled explosion to safely destroy both landmines. Officials confirmed that the operation was conducted without causing any damage to property or personnel.

Landmines are a common feature in forward areas along the LoC, often deployed as part of an anti-infiltration obstacle system. However, during periods of heavy rainfall, these devices can be displaced from their original positions and washed down into accessible areas. This poses a significant risk to civilians and security personnel alike. In response to such situations, Army experts regularly conduct patrols to detect and neutralize these abandoned or displaced explosives, ensuring the safety of the border region.

The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by security forces in managing the volatile border areas of Jammu and Kashmir. The Army’s vigilance and swift action in neutralizing these threats are crucial in maintaining peace and security along the LoC.
