STOCKHOLM – The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet announced on Monday, October 7, 2024, that the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded jointly to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun. The prestigious award recognizes their groundbreaking discovery of microRNA and its crucial role in post-transcriptional gene regulation.

Information was available with The Chenab Times detailing that the laureates’ work unveiled a fundamental principle governing how gene activity is regulated within cells. This discovery has profound implications for understanding cellular development and the functioning of multicellular organisms, including humans. Their research identified a novel class of tiny RNA molecules, known as microRNAs, which play a vital part in controlling gene expression after the initial genetic information has been transcribed.

Ambros, a professor at UMass Chan Medical School, and Ruvkun, a professor at Harvard University, dedicated years of research to understanding how different cell types develop and differentiate. Their persistent investigations led to the identification of the first microRNAs and elucidated their mechanism of action in gene regulation. It is now understood that the human genome codes for over a thousand different microRNAs, highlighting the significance of this discovery in biological processes.

The Nobel Assembly highlighted that while all cells in the body contain the same genetic instructions, microRNAs act as key regulators, ensuring that only the relevant instructions are active in each specific cell type. This precise control is essential for the proper development and function of tissues and organs. Their work revealed an entirely new dimension to gene regulation, proving to be fundamentally important for how organisms develop and function.

The announcement marked the beginning of Nobel Prize week in Stockholm, which celebrates the year’s achievements across various scientific and cultural fields. The Nobel Prize in Physics is scheduled to be announced on Tuesday, followed by Chemistry on Wednesday, and Literature on Thursday. The Nobel Peace Prize announcement will be made on Friday, and the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel will conclude the announcement week on Monday, October 14.

The Nobel Week, a period of celebration and intellectual exchange, typically includes various events, lectures, and dialogues involving the laureates. The award ceremonies and banquets for most of the prizes are scheduled to take place on December 10 in Stockholm, with the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony held in Oslo on the same day. Nobel Week 2024 is scheduled to run from December 6 to 12, featuring a light festival in Stockholm inspired by the laureates’ discoveries.

Victor Ambros was born in Hanover, New Hampshire, USA, in 1953. He earned his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and conducted postdoctoral research there before becoming a Principal Investigator at Harvard University. He later served as a professor at Dartmouth Medical School before assuming his current role at UMass Chan Medical School.

Gary Ruvkun was born in Berkeley, California, USA, in 1952. He is a distinguished researcher whose work has significantly advanced the field of molecular biology. Both laureates have been recognized for their pioneering contributions that have reshaped the understanding of gene regulation and its impact on health and development.
