The Delhi Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with several party workers. The FIR alleges assault on police personnel and obstruction of government work during a protest held in the national capital.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the case was registered in connection with incidents that transpired during the Congress’s demonstration on Wednesday. Police sources indicated that the allegations and the roles of the individuals involved are currently under examination. A total of 91 individuals were reportedly detained during the protest, including multiple Members of Parliament and other prominent party leaders.
The protest saw Rahul Gandhi leading leaders from the INDIA bloc in street demonstrations. He was among many MPs who were detained by the police. The demonstration was en route to a planned sit-in at Jantar Mantar, following a lunch meeting at a South Indian vegetarian restaurant on Janpath. Protesters were stopped by law enforcement officers midway through their journey in buses, which led to an intense confrontation.
Visuals from the scene showed Priyanka Gandhi and other women leaders lying down on the road, holding copies of the Constitution. They were subsequently removed by police and taken onto buses amidst loud sloganeering by opposition members. The protesters were demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The demonstration included MPs from various political parties, including the Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), CPI-M, CPI, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), among others. The FIR marks a significant development in the ongoing political activities and protests in Delhi.
