Jammu and Kashmir researcher named among world’s top scientists for fourth consecutive year

SRINAGAR: Dr. Manzoor Ahmad Mir, a prominent breast cancer researcher from the University of Kashmir, has been recognized for the fourth consecutive year among the world’s top two percent of scientists. The distinction, compiled by Stanford University, highlights his sustained contributions to health sciences.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that Dr. Mir, who also holds an adjunct professor position at the Indian Institute of Sustainability, Gujarat University, Ahmedabad, has been consistently acknowledged in this prestigious global ranking from 2023 to 2026. This repeated recognition underscores his significant and ongoing impact on the international scientific community, particularly in his field of breast cancer research.

Dr. Mir’s research endeavors are primarily focused on the repurposing of existing drugs for breast cancer treatment, investigating the molecular mechanisms that drive cancer development and progression, and understanding the complexities of metastasis and drug resistance. His work aims to deepen the scientific understanding of cancer and explore novel therapeutic strategies. By adopting an interdisciplinary approach and relying on evidence-based methodologies, his research contributes to broader efforts to enhance cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

His academic journey includes a master’s degree in Life Sciences, where he was a gold medalist. He also successfully qualified the CSIR Junior Research Fellowship and National Eligibility Test (CSIR-JRF-NET) on four occasions. Dr. Mir earned his PhD through a collaborative program between Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, and the CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology in Chandigarh.

Throughout his career, Dr. Mir has amassed a substantial body of published work. He has authored over 100 research papers, with a cumulative journal impact factor exceeding 750. His scholarly output is further evidenced by an h-index of 40 and an i10-index of 118. In the last five years alone, his research publications have garnered more than 4,900 citations, demonstrating the wide reach and influence of his scientific contributions.

Beyond research papers, Dr. Mir has authored 22 books and 85 book chapters published by renowned international publishers such as Elsevier, Taylor & Francis, and Springer Nature. He has also been instrumental in developing four massive open online courses (MOOCs) for the SWAYAM platform, an initiative by the Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC) and the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India. These courses, covering topics like Immunology, Endocrinology, Human Genetics, and Human Population Genetics, have reportedly been accessed by over 20,000 students globally over the past seven years.

Dr. Mir has also made substantial contributions to breast cancer research, awareness, and education within the Kashmir Valley. His efforts through publications, collaborations, academic engagement, and community outreach activities have enriched the knowledge base in cancer biology and related biomedical sciences.

His dedication has been acknowledged through several accolades. In 2022, he received the Best Cancer Researcher Award at the Kashmir Expo, presented by the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, an event organized by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, and the Jammu and Kashmir Science, Technology and Innovation Council (JKST&IC). In prior years, he was honored with the Teacher Associateship for Research Excellence award from the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) in 2019, and a Summer Research Fellowship for Teachers from the Indian National Science Academies in 2020. In 2026, he was recognized with the Breast Cancer Awareness and Care Excellence Award at the seventh Cancer Summit Awards in New Delhi.

These recognitions highlight Dr. Mir’s steadfast commitment to scientific research, public awareness, education, and care initiatives. His work solidifies his position as a key contributor to regional and national efforts aimed at advancing cancer research, promoting preventive measures, and developing effective therapeutic strategies.

His research activities are further bolstered by externally funded projects. He has successfully completed six research projects and is currently leading two ongoing projects funded by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), under the Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the Indian government.

Dr. Mir has also demonstrated a significant commitment to teaching and mentorship, having guided eight PhD scholars to completion and currently supervising five doctoral students. Additionally, he has mentored 60 master’s students in their dissertation projects, imparting knowledge in scientific inquiry, research methodology, and analytical skills.

His dedication to technology-enhanced education is evident in the development of the four MOOCs for the SWAYAM platform, expanding access to specialized scientific knowledge for students worldwide. He has also been active in organizing national and international conferences and DST-INSPIRE Science Camps, fostering scientific discourse, interdisciplinary collaboration, and encouraging young students to pursue careers in science.

As an active member of the international scientific community, Dr. Mir belongs to numerous professional organizations, including the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), and the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO). He is also a Fellow of the Royal British Society (FRBS).

Dr. Mir serves on the editorial boards of multiple scientific journals, contributing to the peer-review process and upholding scientific standards. He has also guest-edited special collections for journals such as Scientific Reports and Frontiers in Immunology.

His extensive engagement with the global scientific community includes presentations at international conferences in over 10 countries, fostering scientific exchange and collaborative opportunities. He has also contributed to institutional development, serving as the nodal officer for the Kupwara University Campus and coordinator for collaborations involving Gujarat University. From 2019 to 2025, he served as the coordinator and head of the Department of Bioresources at the University of Kashmir.
