Government Arya Degree College in Nurpur, Himachal Pradesh, organised an awareness workshop focused on mental health and emotional well-being to commemorate World Mental Health Day. The event aimed to educate students on crucial aspects of psychological health, including emotional regulation and stress management.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Mental Health Counselling Committee of the college facilitated the workshop under the guidance of Rakesh Kumar, the officiating principal. The session saw participation from Dr. Seemant, a psychiatrist, and Dr. Abhishek, a health counsellor, both affiliated with the Government Hospital in Nurpur. They provided insights and practical advice to the students attending the workshop.

During the workshop, Dr. Seemant emphasized the importance of acknowledging one’s emotions and approaching challenging situations with rationality rather than succumbing to impulsive reactions. He elaborated on how self-analysis can be a valuable tool for identifying the subtle physical, emotional, and behavioural indicators of stress. To promote overall well-being, students were advised on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, which includes consuming nutritious food, engaging in regular physical exercise, and adhering to a consistent sleep schedule. This holistic approach to health was presented as foundational for robust mental health.

The session also delved into practical stress-management techniques that students could readily adopt. Diaphragmatic breathing exercises and progressive muscle relaxation methods were among the techniques discussed, offering tangible ways to alleviate stress and promote relaxation. The psychiatrist also touched upon the growing societal concerns surrounding addiction, specifically highlighting the increasing prevalence of drug addiction and behavioural addictions. These included the excessive use of the internet, compulsive gaming, and unchecked online shopping habits, underscoring the diverse forms that addiction can manifest in the digital age.

Dr. Seemant further underscored the significant role of counselling services for students who may be experiencing emotional difficulties. He stressed the critical need to address mental health concerns without the burden of stigma, encouraging an open dialogue and a supportive environment for seeking help. By promoting a culture of understanding and acceptance, the college aimed to foster a healthier psychological environment for its student body. The event concluded with a renewed emphasis on the collective responsibility to prioritize mental health and support those who may be struggling.
