Two individuals have died after a pick-up vehicle they were travelling in plummeted into a deep gorge in Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur district on Sunday. The accident occurred as the vehicle was en route from Bhabhanagar to Wangtoo.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the vehicle, originating from Chopal in Shimla district, had gone missing in the Kinnaur area. Following the report, police initiated a search operation. The vehicle was eventually spotted in a gorge near Kafnu.
First responders reached the site of the accident and confirmed that the two occupants of the pick-up vehicle were deceased. The bodies have been recovered and sent for post-mortem examination. Police have registered a case concerning the incident and are investigating the circumstances that led to the fatal fall.
The deceased have been identified as Umesh, aged 24, and Daya, aged 37, both residents of Chopal, Shimla. The exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined, but preliminary reports suggest the vehicle lost control and fell into the approximately 500-meter-deep gorge. Authorities are examining potential factors such as road conditions, speed, or mechanical failure.
Kinnaur district, situated in the northeastern part of Himachal Pradesh, is known for its challenging mountainous terrain and narrow, winding roads. Road accidents, particularly those involving vehicles falling into gorges, are not uncommon in the region, especially during periods of inclement weather or due to the inherent difficulties of navigating the steep slopes. The local administration frequently issues advisories regarding safe driving practices in such vulnerable areas.
The administration has assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted to ascertain the precise reasons behind the mishap. Efforts are underway to ensure that such tragic incidents are prevented in the future through enhanced road safety measures and driver awareness campaigns. The recovery of the bodies and their subsequent handing over to the families for last rites are also being managed by the local authorities.
