An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Punjab Police was fatally shot by unidentified assailants in Tarn Taran district, prompting the Director General of Police to announce compensation of ₹1 crore for his family. The incident marks the fifth targeted attack on police personnel in the state’s border districts this year.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that ASI Iqbal Singh, who was serving with the Counter Intelligence wing in Ferozepur, was on his motorcycle returning home on the evening of October 11, 2026, after offering prayers at a local gurdwara. He was intercepted by assailants on a motorcycle on the Naushehra Pannuan–Lohka Road near Naushehra Pannuan village and was fired upon at close range. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene.

In a statement, the Director General of Police, Punjab, expressed solidarity with the bereaved family, stating that the Punjab Police stands firmly with them in their hour of grief. He further announced that the Chief Minister had sanctioned an ex-gratia amount of ₹1 crore for the family. Additionally, an insurance payout of ₹1 crore from HDFC Bank will be provided to the family of the martyred officer. The DGP added that the ASI would be accorded full police honours.

The killing of ASI Iqbal Singh is the fifth such targeted attack against Punjab Police personnel in the state’s border districts this year. Authorities have launched an extensive investigation into the incident. Police are meticulously examining CCTV footage from the area and pursuing all available leads to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. Initial reports suggest potential links to organised crime networks, with allegations of overseas-based gangsters claiming responsibility for the attack.

Adding to the tragedy, the officer’s nephew, Ajmeet Singh, had been killed in a similar shooting incident in the same village just one month prior, on September 11. ASI Iqbal Singh, believed to be between 54 and 55 years old, was a resident of Naushehra Pannuan village. He is survived by his wife and two children, who are reportedly residing abroad. Senior police officials, including the DIG of Ferozepur Range and the SSP of Tarn Taran, visited the crime scene and are actively overseeing the ongoing investigation.

The Punjab Police has reiterated its commitment to supporting the family of the deceased officer. The force has affirmed its solidarity and pledged to provide all necessary assistance during this difficult time. The announcement of full police honours signifies the recognition of ASI Iqbal Singh’s service and ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
