Srinagar, October 14: The higher elevations of Kashmir experienced fresh overnight snowfall on Wednesday, as an active western disturbance brought inclement weather to the region. The plains, meanwhile, were subjected to overnight rains, according to official reports.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the meteorological department had forecast a continuation of the wet spell for the subsequent 24 hours. Under the influence of the active western disturbance, several higher altitude areas received light to moderate snowfall throughout the night. For some locations, this marked the second consecutive day of snowfall.
Prominent tourist destinations such as Pahalgam in Anantnag district and its surrounding areas recorded overnight snowfall. Intermittent snowfall was also observed in Gulmarg and Sonamarg resorts, as well as along the Zojilla Axis, Razdan Top, and Tulail in Gurez, northern Kashmir.
The plains across the valley, including the summer capital Srinagar, experienced rainfall overnight. However, the morning brought sunshine as clouds began to dissipate.
The meteorological department indicated a likelihood of light to moderate rain across many places, with light snow expected over the higher reaches. Isolated instances of thunder, gusty winds, and hailstorms were also predicted to persist until Thursday. Following this, the weather is anticipated to become generally dry, with only a brief spell of light rain possible at isolated locations on October 16. The forecast suggests a predominantly dry weather pattern will continue until October 24.
The fresh snowfall in the higher reaches is a common phenomenon during this period in Kashmir, often marking the onset of colder weather. While the snowfall typically does not cause significant disruptions in the higher altitudes, it can impact road conditions and visibility. The plains, experiencing rainfall, may face localized waterlogging issues.
The meteorological department’s forecast provides crucial information for local authorities, emergency services, and residents preparing for the changing weather conditions. The period from October 16 to October 24 is expected to offer a temporary respite from the wet spell before any further weather developments occur.
