Mansa police in Punjab have registered a First Information Report (FIR) following the shooting death of an anti-drug activist, Parvinder Singh Jhota, an incident that occurred on Tuesday. The FIR was filed based on the statement of the deceased’s father, ex-serviceman Bhim Singh, who identified the alleged assailant and implicated others in a conspiracy.

The Chenab Times has learned that the FIR names the shop owner, Ashwani Kumar, along with two associates and an individual reportedly speaking on the phone at the time of the incident, as being involved in the alleged plot to kill Jhota. Bhim Singh, in his complaint, described his son as a dedicated anti-drug crusader who had apparently antagonized some politicians and government officials through his activism.

According to the complaint lodged by Bhim Singh, he was at the district courts when he heard gunshots. Upon rushing to the scene, he reported seeing his son covered in blood, making his way towards a shoe store. Bhim Singh alleged that Ashwani Kumar was present with a pistol and accompanied by other individuals. He stated that Ashwani Kumar then opened fire on his son in his presence.

The FIR further claims that Kulwinder Singh Sukhi and some bystanders were also injured during the firing. Bhupinderpal Singh Ruby, who was reportedly with Parvinder Singh Jhota at the time, is cited as a witness to the entire event.

Addressing the developments, Bathinda Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Harjeet Singh confirmed the arrest of two individuals, including Ashwani Kumar, who has been identified as the main accused. The DIG stated that further investigation is ongoing.

Parvinder Singh Jhota was shot dead amid a confrontation that reportedly stemmed from the alleged sale of intoxicating substances at a chemist shop. The incident gained significant attention as Jhota had allegedly live-streamed the confrontation on Facebook. His death has since triggered protests, with his family and supporters demanding swift action against those responsible.

In response to allegations made by Jhota’s family concerning a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and a woman Inspector, the DIG indicated that appropriate action would be taken if any adverse findings emerged against the officials during the course of the investigation. He added that the police department is committed to a thorough and impartial inquiry.

Regarding the demolition exercise carried out at the accused’s property, the DIG stated that the action was conducted legally. He also commented on the protests that ensued, noting that the number of protesters at the shop, which was subsequently vandalized, significantly outnumbered the police personnel present. A minor fire reportedly broke out at the site but was quickly extinguished by authorities.

Responding to inquiries about the ongoing investigation, the DIG shared that preliminary findings suggest Ashwani Kumar was engaged in a telephone conversation with a relative at the moment the incident occurred. Further details regarding the motive and the extent of the alleged conspiracy are expected to be revealed as the investigation progresses.
