Eleven films from Southeastern Europe and the Mediterranean region have been chosen to participate in the 2026 Agora Works in Progress sessions at the Thessaloniki Film Festival. This prestigious program focuses on films in the post-production phase, specifically those with a connection to the Mediterranean and Southeastern European areas.

The Thessaloniki Agora, a vital component of the festival, is dedicated to supporting filmmakers by providing a platform to showcase their projects during their final stages of development. The selection aims to highlight diverse cinematic voices and narratives from the region, fostering international collaboration and distribution opportunities.

Among the selected works is an adaptation of Ioanna Karystiani’s novel ‘Swell.’ Karystiani, a celebrated Greek author known for her evocative storytelling and deep connection to the culture and history of Greece, will see her literary work brought to the screen.

The Agora Works in Progress sessions offer selected projects access to industry professionals, including producers, distributors, sales agents, and festival programmers. Participants engage in tailored networking events, one-on-one meetings, and feedback sessions designed to facilitate the completion and international release of their films.

This initiative by the Thessaloniki Film Festival underscores its commitment to nurturing cinematic talent and promoting the films of emerging and established filmmakers from the broader European and Mediterranean landscape. The festival, a significant event in the European film calendar, provides a crucial bridge between creative artistic endeavors and the commercial realities of the global film market.

The specific titles and filmmakers involved in the 2026 Agora Works in Progress will be announced in the coming months. The festival has historically played a pivotal role in launching careers and introducing audiences to compelling new cinema from a diverse array of cultural backgrounds.
