The upcoming British drama film ‘7 Miles Out,’ directed by Carol Morley, is set to offer a poignant coming-of-age narrative centered on grief, music, and friendship. Starring Lucy Halliday in the lead role of Ann, the film is an adaptation of Morley’s semi-autobiographical novel of the same name.
A Story of Loss and Self-Discovery
Set against the backdrop of Manchester’s vibrant music scene in the 1970s and 1980s, ‘7 Miles Out’ follows Ann as she navigates the complexities of adolescence following the death of her father. The film delves into themes of first love, friendship, and the profound impact of grief, with Ann finding her voice and solace through music and creativity. The narrative captures the cultural pulse of the era, referencing influential bands such as Joy Division, New Order, and Magazine.
The film’s setting in Stockport, Greater Manchester, and its seven-year span allows for an immersive exploration of the period’s post-punk influences and the emergence of iconic venues like The Haçienda. Cinematographer Agnès Godard, known for her work on ‘The Falling,’ captured the film on location.
A Stellar Cast and Creative Team
Lucy Halliday, who garnered critical acclaim for her performance in ‘Blue Jean,’ takes on the central role of Ann. She is joined by established actors Aidan Gillen and Gemma Whelan, who portray her parents. The film also features an original soundtrack with songs written by Morley and Carly Paradis, who also composed the score, alongside music from key bands of the era.
Carol Morley, an acclaimed filmmaker known for works such as ‘Dreams of a Life’ and ‘The Falling,’ has written and directed ‘7 Miles Out.’ The film is produced by Cairo Cannon for Cannon and Morley Productions in association with Revolution Films.
Premiere and Release
The world premiere of ‘7 Miles Out’ is scheduled for October 17, 2026, at the BFI London Film Festival, where it will compete in the Official Competition. The film is slated for release in UK and Irish cinemas in 2027.
