Uttar Pradesh, a leading state in India’s sugarcane and sugar production, has introduced four new sugarcane varieties aimed at enhancing crop yields, improving sugar recovery, and increasing farmer incomes. The announcement follows a period where the dominant sugarcane variety, Co.0238, has shown increased susceptibility to red rot, a significant fungal disease leading to crop losses.

The new varieties, developed through collaborative efforts involving the Uttar Pradesh Council of Sugarcane Research (UPCSR) and the Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research (IISR), are designed to offer robust resistance against red rot while delivering higher yields and better sugar content. Among the newly approved varieties, CoS.23232 has garnered particular attention for its early maturity and superior performance compared to the older Co.0238 variety. Field trials have indicated that CoS.23232 can produce an average of 95.56 tonnes per hectare, representing an approximately 10% increase over existing crops, and offering significant resistance to red rot disease.

The development of these new varieties is crucial for sustaining and boosting the state’s agricultural economy. Sugarcane cultivation in Uttar Pradesh supports millions of growers and has evolved into a bioenergy hub through ethanol blending and cogeneration of power. The transition towards early-maturing sugarcane varieties has been a key driver of increased productivity and sugar recovery in recent years. While Co.0238 previously dominated the cultivation area, its vulnerability to red rot has necessitated a shift towards more resilient alternatives.

In addition to CoS.23232, other newly introduced varieties include those with early and mid-late maturity, offering farmers a wider range of disease-resistant options throughout the year. Some of these varieties are also being developed to tolerate specific environmental stresses such as waterlogging and salinity, further enhancing their suitability for diverse agro-climatic conditions within the state. The development process for a new sugarcane variety is extensive, often taking up to 11 years from initial cross-breeding to commercial farming, involving rigorous testing for yield, sugar content, disease resistance, and ratooning ability.

The Uttar Pradesh government’s focus on modernizing its sugarcane sector through the introduction of these advanced varieties is expected to reinforce the state’s position as a major contributor to India’s sugar and bioenergy production. The initiative not only aims to protect farmers from disease-related losses but also to enhance the overall profitability and sustainability of sugarcane cultivation, thereby strengthening the rural economy.
