Harry Styles paid an emotional tribute to his late friend and former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne during a concert at Madison Square Garden, marking the second anniversary of Payne’s death. Styles debuted an unreleased song titled “What Is Enough,” which he revealed he wrote for Payne two years ago.
During the concert on Friday night, October 16, Styles addressed the crowd, reflecting on his friendship with Payne. “Two years ago today, I lost one of those friends,” Styles shared, his voice filled with emotion. He encouraged the audience to look after each other, adding, “Really it’s just about looking after each other.” Styles then introduced the song by saying, “I’m gonna play a song that I wrote for my friend about two years ago.”
Liam Payne died on October 16, 2024, at the age of 31, after falling from a third-story balcony of his hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The cause of death was officially listed as polytrauma and internal and external bleeding. The tribute from Styles comes as other former One Direction members have also acknowledged the anniversary, with Niall Horan becoming emotional during a concert when a recording of Payne’s voice was played. The Mirror reported that Siva Kaneswaran of The Wanted also paid tribute to Payne, remembering him as a “wonderful,” sensitive, and sincere person, despite the past rivalry between their bands.
Styles’ concert at Madison Square Garden is part of his extensive “Together, Together Tour.” The performance not only served as a memorial for Payne but also highlighted the enduring bond between the former members of One Direction and their close-knit fan base, who shared their own emotional reactions to Styles’ tribute on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter).
