Srinagar observed World Trauma Day with an annual Bone & Joint Marathon organised along the scenic Foreshore Road, aiming to heighten public awareness about trauma prevention, road safety, and the critical importance of timely emergency medical care.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the event was orchestrated by the Postgraduate Department of Orthopaedics at the Hospital for Bone & Joint Surgery, Barzulla, Srinagar, in close collaboration with the Orthopaedic Surgeons Association of Kashmir (OSAK).
The marathon saw active participation from a diverse group including orthopaedic surgeons, physiotherapists, other healthcare professionals, and members of the general public, underscoring a collective commitment to improving community health and safety.
The event was formally inaugurated by Professor Imtiyaz Hussain, Head of the Department of Orthopaedics; Professor Arshad Bashir, President of OSAK; Dr. Asif Nazir Baba, General Secretary of OSAK; and Professor Naseemul Gani, who collectively flagged off the participants.
Organizers addressed the participants, emphasizing that the marathon’s core objective was to disseminate vital information regarding preventable injuries and to foster a culture of responsible behaviour on roadways. They specifically appealed to citizens, with a particular focus on younger demographics, to adhere strictly to traffic regulations, utilize helmets and seat belts, refrain from reckless driving, and ensure prompt access to medical attention in emergency situations.
Speakers at the event highlighted the significant public health burden posed by trauma, advocating for a unified approach involving government administration, healthcare institutions, educational bodies, and civil society to bolster trauma care services and elevate road safety consciousness across the region.
Through this initiative, the Orthopaedic Surgeons Association of Kashmir reaffirmed its dedication to promoting preventive healthcare measures, engaging with the community, and undertaking public education campaigns.
A central message conveyed during the event was: “Every life matters, every preventable injury counts, and every responsible action can save a life.” This slogan aimed to resonate with individuals and encourage personal accountability.
The organizing committee, comprised of Dr. Iftikhar Wani, Dr. Ansarul Haq Lone, and Dr. Mudasir Malik, extended their gratitude to all participants, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters whose contributions were instrumental in ensuring the event’s success.
The program concluded with a direct appeal to the public, urging them to internalize road safety as a personal responsibility and to collaborate in collective efforts to reduce the incidence of preventable injuries, disabilities, and fatalities within Kashmir.
