In Uttar Pradesh, a total of 16.18 lakh applications were submitted under Form 6 during the enumeration phase of the Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls, according to information from the Chief Electoral Officer’s office.
The Chenab Times has learned that this significant number of applications for new voter registrations was filed during the period dedicated to updating the electoral database. Form 6 is the standard application used by individuals seeking to register as new voters.
The Special Summary Revision process is a periodic exercise undertaken by the Election Commission of India to ensure that the electoral rolls are accurate, up-to-date, and inclusive. This typically involves verifying existing voter details, adding new eligible voters, and deleting names of deceased or permanently relocated individuals.
The Chief Electoral Officer, Navdeep Rinwa, addressed queries stemming from a report by The Reporters’ Collective. This report had raised concerns regarding the alleged ‘mysterious’ addition of Form 6 applications and the subsequent non-disclosure of applicant names. In response, Mr. Rinwa confirmed the total number of applications received, indicating a robust participation in the registration drive across the state.
The election authorities in Uttar Pradesh have emphasized their commitment to transparency and accuracy in the electoral process. The enumeration phase is a critical period where detailed verification and data collection take place. Following the submission of applications, the election machinery undertakes a thorough scrutiny process to validate the eligibility of each applicant before their names are officially added to the voter list.
This exercise is crucial for ensuring that all eligible citizens have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote in upcoming elections. It also serves to maintain the integrity of the electoral roll, preventing any discrepancies or fraudulent entries. The substantial number of applications received suggests a high level of engagement from the electorate and a keen interest in participating in the democratic process.
The Chief Electoral Officer’s office in Uttar Pradesh has been working to facilitate the SSR process across all districts. Booth level officers are typically tasked with identifying eligible new voters and assisting them in filling out the necessary forms. Public awareness campaigns are also conducted to inform citizens about the revision process and encourage them to check their names on the electoral rolls and register if eligible.
The Special Summary Revision process usually involves several stages, including the enumeration or data collection phase, followed by the publication of draft electoral rolls, a period for filing claims and objections, and finally, the disposal of these claims and objections. The completion of the enumeration phase with a large number of applications indicates that the process is moving forward actively. The subsequent stages will involve detailed verification to ensure that only eligible individuals are enrolled as voters, thereby upholding the principles of free and fair elections.
