A significant fire broke out at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday, following an unspecified “serious incident” that resulted in fatalities and injuries, officials confirmed. The blaze spread rapidly due to high winds, prompting a coordinated response from federal, provincial, and local authorities.

Defense Minister David McGuinty announced the casualties in a video statement, expressing sorrow over the loss of life and injuries sustained during the incident. He described the situation as “active and delicate” and indicated that an investigation would commence once the fire was under control. McGuinty did not disclose the exact number of casualties or the cause of the initial incident, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the emergency response.

The fire began on the base, located approximately 210 kilometers (130 miles) southeast of Edmonton, and quickly expanded beyond its perimeter due to strong winds. The Municipal District of Wainwright reported that the fire had crossed the base fence and was spreading rapidly. Firefighters from multiple jurisdictions were deployed to combat the blaze, though no evacuation order had been issued for the surrounding community.

Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the fire stemmed from a serious incident and offered condolences to those affected. He stated that the federal government was working closely with Alberta officials and local authorities to provide necessary support. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith described the event as “significant and tragic,” highlighting its impact on military personnel.

Canadian Forces Base Wainwright is a key training facility for the Canadian Army, housing the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre. It serves as a crucial ground for soldiers preparing for combat operations. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are involved in the investigation into the incident.

Authorities have urged residents to avoid the affected area, keep roads clear for emergency responders, and to only visit the Wainwright Health Center for critical medical needs. The community of Wainwright has been providing support to the base, including hospital and firefighting assistance.

Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre acknowledged the severity of the situation, stating he had spoken with the Prime Minister and Defense Minister. He extended his support to those impacted and encouraged adherence to emergency instructions.

The exact cause of the incident and the subsequent fire remain under investigation. Further details are expected to be released as the situation develops and investigations progress.
