A member of the National Guard sustained injuries in a shooting incident that occurred late Sunday night in Washington D.C., according to local police reports released early Monday morning. The incident unfolded as National Guard members intervened in a physical altercation.

Information available with The Chenab Times indicates that the confrontation began around 11 p.m. on Sunday when National Guard personnel attempted to break up a fight. During the intervention, an individual involved in the dispute allegedly began firing a weapon. One National Guard member was shot in the leg by this individual.

According to D.C. Interim Police Chief Jeffery W. Carroll, National Guard members present immediately ordered the individual to drop the weapon. The situation escalated when the individual reportedly pointed the firearm towards the National Guard troops. In response, three Guard members discharged their firearms, with at least one round striking the individual in the abdomen. Both the injured Guard member and the individual who fired the weapon were transported to local hospitals with injuries described as non-life-threatening. The suspect was subsequently taken into custody.

The shooting took place in the vicinity of the 400 block of 8th Street SE. Police stated that approximately seven to eight National Guard members, who were in a van monitoring a group on the sidewalk, exited their vehicle to de-escalate the fight when the gunshots were heard. It remains unclear which of the responding Guard members fired the shot that hit the suspect.

The Metropolitan Police Department has launched an investigation into the late-night shooting. The department assured the public that there are no further threats to the community. This incident occurred nearly a year after a previous shooting involving National Guard members in Washington D.C. On November 26, 2025, two National Guard members were shot near the Farragut West Metro station. Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, died from her injuries the following day, while Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe survived his injuries and was undergoing recovery.

In relation to the November 2025 incident, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national, was charged with first-degree murder and assault. Lakanwal, who was also shot during the 2025 confrontation, had pleaded not guilty to the charges. The investigation into that incident suggested the attack was ambush-style, with Lakanwal having reportedly traveled across the country before approaching the troops. The motive for the 2025 shooting was under investigation, and reports indicated Lakanwal had received prior paramilitary instruction under contract with the CIA in Afghanistan.
