The latest iteration of the popular Swedish crime drama ‘Wallander’ has secured distribution deals in the United Kingdom and North America. The BBC has acquired the rights for the UK broadcast, while MHz Choice will bring the series to audiences in the United States and Canada.
The Chenab Times has learned that Banijay Rights, the distributor behind the series, has also successfully brokered a deal with NPO in the Netherlands, extending the international reach of the TV4 original. The series features a new ensemble of actors portraying the iconic detective, originally created by Henning Mankell.
The new ‘Wallander’ series is set in the picturesque yet often crime-ridden southern Swedish city of Ystad, where Inspector Kurt Wallander, or his associates, grapple with complex cases. This latest adaptation aims to capture the essence of Mankell’s renowned detective novels, known for their atmospheric settings and intricate plotlines.
Previous iterations of ‘Wallander’ have garnered significant international acclaim, particularly the series starring Krister Henriksson in the title role, which concluded in 2013. The BBC previously aired that version, and its success paved the way for future adaptations to find audiences on British television.
MHz Choice, a streaming service specializing in international programming, has a history of introducing critically acclaimed foreign-language dramas to the American market. Its acquisition of the new ‘Wallander’ series signals a continued demand for high-quality Scandinavian crime fiction among its subscriber base.
While specific broadcast dates for the UK and North American releases were not immediately available, the deals indicate that fans of the franchise can anticipate its arrival in the coming months. The distribution agreements are a testament to the enduring appeal of the ‘Wallander’ brand and the global fascination with Nordic noir.
