Doctors at the Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College (RPGMC) in Tanda, Himachal Pradesh, have successfully performed a complex open-heart surgery, marking a significant advancement for the institution’s Cardiac Surgery Department. The procedure involved replacing a severely damaged aortic valve and repairing an enlarged aorta.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the surgical team employed a heart-lung machine to support the patient during the intricate operation. The patient’s damaged aortic valve was replaced with an artificial prosthesis, and the weakened section of the enlarged aorta was reinforced using a synthetic graft.
The critical surgery was spearheaded by college principal Dr. Milap Sharma and Dr. Desh Bandhu Sharma, Head of the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Department. Key contributions were also made by Dr. Vikas Panwar and Dr. Puneet Sharma. The anaesthesia for the complex procedure was managed by Dr. Bharti Gupta and Dr. Aman Thakur. The successful outcome was also attributed to the dedicated efforts of the operating theatre staff, nursing personnel, and the intensive care unit (ICU) employees.
The patient received this advanced cardiac treatment entirely free of charge, facilitated by the Him Care health scheme. This initiative ensured that the individual could access life-saving surgery without incurring substantial medical expenses, highlighting the state’s commitment to accessible healthcare for its citizens.
The successful execution of this complex surgery underscores the rapidly developing capabilities of RPGMC, Tanda, in managing and treating severe cardiac conditions. The hospital serves a broad population base, including residents of Kangra district and other areas across Himachal Pradesh. Previously, many patients requiring such specialized cardiac interventions had to travel to major medical centres outside the state, leading to increased costs and logistical challenges.
The department at RPGMC, Tanda, is actively enhancing its expertise and bolstering its infrastructure to accommodate an increasing number of complex cardiac procedures. This strategic development aims to bring state-of-the-art cardiac care closer to the doorstep of patients within the region, reducing the need for long-distance travel for critical medical treatment. The achievement is a testament to the growing self-sufficiency of medical institutions in Himachal Pradesh in providing advanced healthcare solutions.
The successful operation involved meticulous planning and execution, showcasing the proficiency of the surgical team. The use of a heart-lung machine, a standard but essential component in such procedures, allowed the surgeons to operate on a static heart. The replacement of the aortic valve is a common yet vital procedure for patients suffering from aortic stenosis or regurgitation, while the aortic graft repair addresses potential risks associated with aortic aneurysms, preventing catastrophic events such as dissection or rupture.
The presence of a well-equipped Cardiac Surgery Department at RPGMC, Tanda, is expected to significantly improve health outcomes for cardiac patients in Himachal Pradesh. It also serves as a crucial training ground for aspiring cardiac surgeons and allied medical professionals. The Him Care scheme plays an instrumental role in making such advanced medical interventions accessible to a wider segment of the population, irrespective of their economic background.
This development is anticipated to foster further medical tourism within the state for specialized cardiac care, reducing the outflow of patients and resources to other parts of the country. The focus on building in-house expertise and advanced facilities at government medical colleges aligns with national efforts to strengthen the healthcare infrastructure in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, ensuring equitable access to quality medical services across India.
