Jammu, Oct 22: Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma on Thursday accused the National Conference (NC) of deliberately delaying the much-anticipated Panchayat and municipal elections in Jammu and Kashmir, citing fear of a significant electoral defeat. Sharma stated that these elections would serve as a crucial assessment of the performance of the current administration.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, Sharma made these remarks on the sidelines of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) event, asserting that the NC leadership is reluctant to allow alternative political voices to emerge within the Union Territory. He attributed the persistent delays to what he described as the “ego, arrogance and unwillingness” of the Abdullah family, the prominent leadership of the National Conference.
Sharma elaborated that the NC leadership is apprehensive of facing a substantial loss in the elections, which he believes would provide an opportunity for the electorate to judge the government’s track record. The Leader of Opposition further criticized the administration for its alleged failure to meet its commitments regarding essential services such as electricity supply, the availability of LPG cylinders, employment generation, and the distribution of ration supplies.
The political landscape in Jammu and Kashmir has been marked by extended periods without elected local bodies, a situation that political observers have often linked to security concerns and administrative complexities. The demand for timely and fair elections to Panchayat and municipal bodies has been a recurring theme from various political parties and civil society groups, who argue that these local institutions are vital for grassroots governance and public engagement.
Speaking further on the security situation, Sharma noted a significant improvement over the past five years. He claimed that militancy had seen a substantial decline and pointed out that no local youth had joined militant organisations in the preceding two years. This assertion comes amidst ongoing efforts by the administration to restore normalcy and democratic processes across the Union Territory.
The absence of elected representatives at the Panchayat and municipal levels has implications for the implementation of local development schemes and the redressal of public grievances. Political analysts suggest that holding these elections is crucial for empowering local communities and ensuring their active participation in the governance structure.
The incumbent administration has faced scrutiny over its handling of development initiatives and its approach to electoral processes. The opposition parties, particularly the BJP, have consistently pressed for the immediate commencement of electioneering for local bodies, framing it as a democratic imperative and a measure of public trust.
The statements by Sunil Sharma underscore the political divisions and the strategic maneuvering that often characterize the electoral discourse in Jammu and Kashmir. The call for elections is viewed by many as a necessary step towards strengthening democratic foundations and ensuring representative governance at the local level, which in turn is expected to foster development and public participation.
