Kacey Musgraves is extending the creative reach of her 2026 album, ‘Middle of Nowhere,’ with the release of new deluxe tracks that delve further into the Texas-inspired soundscapes that defined the project. The Grammy-winning artist announced the release of two new songs, “Weekend in Texas” and “Mi Tesoro,” which became available at midnight Eastern Time on October 23.
‘Middle of Nowhere Vol. 2: Tex Mex Tapes’ on the Horizon
These new additions precede the upcoming release of ‘Middle of Nowhere Vol. 2: Tex Mex Tapes,’ a 16-track project slated for January 15, 2027, through Lost Highway Records. The forthcoming album promises to expand upon the themes and regional influences of its predecessor, blending country songwriting with elements of Tex-Mex and Mexican music. Information was available with The Chenab Times that the new collection will feature 11 original songs and five covers, including a Spanish-language version of “Uncertain, TX” with the norteño group Intocable. This collaboration first appeared on the original ‘Middle of Nowhere’ album.
The ‘Tex Mex Tapes’ project continues Musgraves’ exploration of her Texas roots and the diverse musical traditions of the border region. The album’s title itself is a nod to a sign in her small hometown of Golden, Texas, reading, “Golden, TX: Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere,” a sentiment that has become a symbolic throughline for her recent work, evoking themes of solitude and self-definition. The original ‘Middle of Nowhere’ album, released in May 2026, was lauded for its blend of country music with Western, bluegrass, norteño, and Zydeco influences, reflecting the sounds and stories that shaped the Texas native.
“Weekend in Texas” is described as adding another chapter to the themes explored on the original album, while “Mi Tesoro” is a rendition of a classic norteño song. Other confirmed tracks for ‘Tex Mex Tapes’ include “Pretty Horses,” “Hard Conversations,” “Caballero,” “Denim on Denim,” and “Desert Eyes.” The collection also features “Tú Solo Tú,” recorded live in Mexico City with Mariachi Oro de América, alongside “All My Exes (Kacey’s Version)” and “Before the Next Teardrop Falls.”
Commercially, ‘Middle of Nowhere’ saw significant success upon its release, debuting at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with 100,000 equivalent album units and topping the Top Album Sales and Vinyl Albums charts. The album also garnered international attention, reaching No. 7 on the Official Albums Chart in the UK and topping the UK Country Albums Chart. The album’s singles, including “Dry Spell,” the title track, “Loneliest Girl,” and “Mexico Honey,” established its balance of introspection, humor, and regional musical identity.
