The Union Territory of Ladakh has officially achieved the distinction of becoming India’s first fully certified 100% organic Union Territory, marking a significant milestone in sustainable agriculture and ecological conservation.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the declaration follows a comprehensive, multi-year initiative focused on phasing out the use of synthetic fertilizers, chemical pesticides, and other toxic soil additives across both Leh and Kargil districts. The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh made the announcement, recognizing the dedicated efforts of local farmers and the administration’s sustained commitment to promoting chemical-free farming practices.

This achievement is poised to play a crucial role in safeguarding Ladakh’s delicate Himalayan ecosystem, enhancing the health of its soil and water resources, and boosting the incomes of farmers. By building upon traditional farming methods and the region’s unique agro-ecological conditions, Ladakh is establishing itself as a leading model for sustainable high-altitude agriculture.

The Lieutenant Governor, in a statement shared on social media platform X, conveyed, “A proud moment for Ladakh as it becomes India’s first 100% Organic Union Territory, thanks to the dedication and hard work of our farmers. This milestone reflects our commitment to fulfilling Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji’s vision of chemical-free farming, environmental conservation and sustainable livelihoods.”

He further elaborated on the policy’s implications: “Our strict prohibition on chemical fertilizers and continued efforts towards organic certification will protect Ladakh’s fragile Himalayan ecosystem, improve soil and water health, and enhance the value of local produce. This would further strengthen market linkages, improve farmers’ incomes and establish Ladakh as a model for sustainable high-altitude agriculture. My congratulations to all farmers and stakeholders on this historic achievement!”

In a significant policy intervention in July 2026, a complete prohibition was ordered on the procurement, distribution, sale, marketing, and use of chemical and synthetic fertilizers for agricultural activities throughout Ladakh. This directive aims to preserve the integrity of organic certification, protect vital soil and water resources, and bolster the long-term sustainability of the agricultural sector within the Union Territory.

To support farmers through this transition, the administration has implemented various measures. In March 2026, consignments of organic fertilizers were dispatched for distribution to farmers across Ladakh’s villages, ensuring their availability well before the commencement of the sowing season.

The transition to organic farming is anticipated to generate new economic prospects for Ladakh’s farmers. By enhancing the market value of locally cultivated organic produce, which includes items such as apricots, sea buckthorn, buckwheat, barley, and various vegetables, farmers stand to benefit significantly. The process of obtaining organic certification, coupled with improved post-harvest management, value addition, effective branding, and stronger market connections, is expected to provide farmers with access to a growing consumer base that increasingly prioritizes authentic, traceable, and organically produced food items.
