Chennai, Tamil Nadu: Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has presented cash incentives totaling ₹49 lakh to medalists and participants from Tamil Nadu who showcased their skills at the WorldSkills Competition. This recognition underscores the state government’s commitment to fostering vocational excellence and supporting young talent on the global stage.

The WorldSkills Competition, held biennially, is the largest international platform for vocational education and skills excellence. India has been actively participating in this prestigious event, with participants demonstrating their prowess across a wide spectrum of industries, from traditional crafts to cutting-edge technologies. The 47th edition of the competition took place in Lyon, France, from September 10 to September 15, 2024, featuring over 1,400 competitors from nearly 70 countries.

India’s contingent at the WorldSkills Competition comprised 60 competitors and 52 experts, showcasing their abilities in 52 different skills. A notable aspect of India’s participation was the strong representation of female competitors, highlighting the nation’s push for gender equality in vocational fields. Several of these skills, such as Manufacturing Team Challenge, Robot System Integration, Industry 4.0, Cyber Security, Mobile Robotics, Mechatronics, and Concrete Construction Works, emphasized collaboration and teamwork.

Tamil Nadu has consistently shown strong participation in skill-based competitions. In the IndiaSkills 2024 National Competition, the state recorded the highest number of participants, with 86 candidates competing. This highlights the robust skill development ecosystem within Tamil Nadu and its dedication to nurturing young talent. The IndiaSkills Competition serves as a crucial platform for identifying and preparing candidates for international events like WorldSkills.

The state government’s initiative to reward participants and medalists from WorldSkills is part of a broader strategy to encourage and incentivize excellence in vocational training. Chief Minister Vijay has a track record of recognizing athletes and skilled professionals for their achievements. Previously, he has announced substantial cash rewards for athletes who have excelled in various international sporting events, including the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. These incentives range from lakhs to crores of rupees, depending on the medal won and the competition level.

The recognition extended to the WorldSkills participants reinforces the importance placed on technical and vocational education by the Tamil Nadu government. By celebrating these achievements, the state aims to inspire more young individuals to pursue skill development, thereby contributing to the economic growth and industrial advancement of the region. The cash incentives serve not only as a reward for past accomplishments but also as a motivation for future endeavors, encouraging participants to continue honing their skills and aim for even greater success in their chosen fields.
