Counting for 11 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council seats revealed a mixed outcome for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday, with a significant loss in the Varanasi teachers’ constituency to the Samajwadi Party (SP). The results, which emerged after extensive vote counting, indicated a reshaped political landscape across the state’s council seats.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that SP candidate Lal Bihari Yadav secured a victory in the Varanasi teachers’ seat, defeating BJP’s Dr. Pramod Kumar Mishra. The counting process for this particular constituency commenced early Tuesday morning at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Navin Mandi complex in Paharia, Varanasi, involving the sorting and bundling of ballot papers before the district-wise vote tallying began. By late evening, after two rounds of counting, Yadav had garnered 10,958 votes compared to Mishra’s 6,060, confirming his win and marking a notable setback for the BJP.
The elections, which saw voting on October 23 for a total of 11 seats, involved 152 candidates vying for the support of 14.81 lakh voters. The overall voter turnout across these constituencies stood at approximately 55 percent. The counting operations were conducted simultaneously across seven centres located in Lucknow, Varanasi, Agra, Meerut, Jhansi, Bareilly, and Gorakhpur.
While the Varanasi result presented a challenge for the BJP, other constituencies saw different outcomes. In Agra, the BJP candidate Dr. Manvendra Pratap Singh successfully retained his seat in the graduates’ constituency for a second consecutive term. Similarly, in the Lucknow teachers’ constituency, BJP’s Umesh Dwivedi achieved a significant victory, defeating SP candidate Sushil Kumar by a margin of 4,818 votes. This win marked Dwivedi’s third consecutive term from the Lucknow seat.
However, the final results for several other seats remained undetermined as the counting extended into later rounds, highlighting the competitive nature of these elections. In the Allahabad-Jhansi graduates’ constituency, SP candidate Dr. Mansingh Yadav held a substantial lead of 18,639 votes after the seventh round, with 84,052 ballot papers having been counted.
The Gorakhpur-Faizabad teachers’ constituency presented a particularly dynamic contest, with the count influenced by the allocation of second-preference votes. As of the latest reports, nine candidates had been eliminated from the race. The lead of BJP candidate Dhruv Tripathi had narrowed from 512 votes to 447, with approximately 15,700 ballot papers yet to be examined and five more candidates awaiting elimination. At the Gorakhpur counting centre, the fourth round had tallied 40,811 valid votes and 2,800 invalid votes, bringing the total votes examined to 43,611.
The entire counting process across all centres was conducted under stringent security measures, including the extensive use of CCTV cameras and videography to ensure transparency and prevent irregularities. In Jhansi, specific security protocols were implemented, including the closure of a section of the route leading to the counting venue at Bundelkhand Degree College.
The unfolding results on Tuesday provided a nuanced picture of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections, demonstrating that while the BJP secured key victories, it also faced substantial challenges and losses, particularly in the Varanasi teachers’ constituency. The final outcomes in several of the remaining seats were contingent on the progression of further counting rounds and the distribution of preference votes, underscoring the intricate nature of the electoral process for these graduate and teacher constituencies.
