The Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) is set to develop seven new playgrounds across the city, an initiative backed by an estimated investment of ₹2.2 crore. The project aims to enhance sports engagement and promote physical fitness among the youth of Shimla.
Information was available with The Chenab Times regarding discussions on the construction of these new sports facilities. These discussions took place during a recent meeting of the Finance Contract and Planning Committee (FCPC), which was presided over by Mayor Surender Chauhan. The committee reviewed proposals and plans for the development of new public spaces dedicated to sports.
Mayor Surender Chauhan acknowledged the limited availability of space for playgrounds within Shimla, which has previously restricted opportunities for many young residents to participate actively in sports. Initially, proposals for playgrounds were made for ten potential locations. However, after careful evaluation, only seven sites were found to be suitable, free from land disputes, and available for immediate development. The corporation is expected to commence construction work at these selected locations in the near future.
The SMC’s ambition extends beyond the initial seven grounds, as the corporation is actively identifying additional spaces for further playground development. The overarching goal is to establish playgrounds in all 34 wards under the municipal corporation’s jurisdiction. To facilitate this expansion, officials have been directed to expedite the identification of suitable land parcels. Furthermore, local councillors have been tasked with identifying potential sites within their respective wards and reporting them to the corporation.
Mayor Chauhan highlighted a significant concern regarding the correlation between a lack of physical activity and the rise in drug abuse among young people. He stated that the decision to construct new playgrounds in every ward is a strategic measure to provide positive alternatives for the youth. By encouraging participation in sports, the corporation hopes to steer young individuals away from harmful substances and towards a healthier lifestyle. This initiative is seen as a crucial step in addressing social issues through community development and the promotion of recreational activities.
The project underscores the municipal corporation’s commitment to improving urban infrastructure with a focus on public health and youth welfare. The development of these playgrounds is anticipated to provide safe and accessible spaces for children and adolescents to engage in physical activities, foster athletic talent, and build community bonds. The financial allocation of ₹2.2 crore signifies a substantial investment in the city’s future, prioritizing the well-being of its younger population. The emphasis on addressing drug abuse through sports infrastructure reflects a proactive approach to public safety and social development in Shimla.
The SMC’s plan to ensure widespread access to sports facilities across all wards aims to create a more equitable environment for sports participation. This comprehensive approach is expected to benefit a broad spectrum of the youth population, irrespective of their ward of residence. The corporation’s proactive stance in identifying and developing these spaces demonstrates a forward-thinking strategy to integrate sports and recreation into the fabric of urban life in Shimla. The continuous effort to find and utilize available land for these purposes signifies the dedication of the municipal leadership to enhancing the quality of life for its citizens.
