Indian filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, known for directing the crime thriller ‘Kaante,’ the gangster saga ‘Shootout at Wadala,’ and the Hrithik Roshan-starrer ‘Kaabil,’ has died at the age of 59. His passing followed a fall at his residence in Mumbai on October 30.
The news of Gupta’s death was reported by the Press Trust of India. Milap Zaveri, a director and long-time friend of Gupta who had collaborated with him, confirmed the loss.
Gupta established himself in the Indian film industry with his distinctive style in action and crime dramas. ‘Kaante,’ released in 2002, was a multi-starrer heist film that gained significant attention for its slick production and ensemble cast, including Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Sunil Shetty, and Akshaye Khanna. The film was noted for its suspenseful narrative and action sequences, drawing comparisons to Hollywood thrillers.
His career also included directing ‘Zinda’ (2006), a psychological thriller starring Sanjay Dutt, and ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’ (2007), a dramatization of a real-life police encounter. He later directed ‘Shootout at Wadala’ (2013), which explored the rise of gangster Manya Surve.
In 2017, Gupta directed ‘Kaabil,’ a revenge thriller that starred Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam. The film was a commercial success, praised for its performances and tight screenplay. More recently, he was associated with the series ‘Mumbai Diaries 26/11,’ a medical drama set during the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which he directed and co-created.
Gupta’s directorial work often delved into the darker aspects of urban life, focusing on crime, violence, and the complexities of the underworld. He was recognized for his ability to craft visually engaging narratives with strong action choreography and compelling performances.
