German director Isabelle Stever’s drama “I Rarely Wake Up Dreaming,” which confronts the plight of a transgender man unable to flee Ukraine following the Russian invasion, has been honored with the Ethical Film Award at the 36th Tokyo International Film Festival. The accolade, established in 2023 with support from Sumitomo Corporation, recognizes films that illuminate critical global issues such as environmental concerns, poverty, and discrimination.

The Chenab Times has learned that the jury selected “I Rarely Wake Up Dreaming” from three nominated films, which were themselves chosen from a broader selection of features that exemplified ethical storytelling. The festival, held in Tokyo, concluded its run on November 5.

“I Rarely Wake Up Dreaming” centers on a transgender man who is barred from leaving Ukraine due to the war. The narrative explores his internal struggles and the external barriers he faces in seeking safety and an escape from the conflict, highlighting the specific vulnerabilities of marginalized individuals during times of crisis.

The Ethical Film Award aims to draw attention to cinematic works that not only entertain but also provoke thought and foster empathy regarding pressing societal challenges. By awarding Stever’s film, the festival underscored its commitment to showcasing diverse narratives and amplifying voices that often go unheard in mainstream discourse.

Isabelle Stever, a filmmaker known for her work that delves into complex social and personal themes, directed and penned the screenplay for the award-winning drama. Her previous works have often explored themes of identity, societal pressures, and human resilience.

The Tokyo International Film Festival is a prominent platform for global cinema, attracting filmmakers, industry professionals, and audiences from around the world. This year’s festival featured a wide array of films, with a particular focus on those that engage with contemporary social and political issues.

The award for “I Rarely Wake Up Dreaming” signifies a recognition of its compelling narrative and its significant contribution to raising awareness about the human cost of conflict, particularly for LGBTQ+ individuals caught in geopolitical crises.
