Fisherman Drowns in River Kalnai Near Doda’s Thathri

Thathri, June 23 – A 30-years old fisherman, Basharat Hussain, son of Zuhoor Din and resident of Kahara, presently living in Donadi, reportedly drowned in the River Kalnai of Chenab Valley on Monday evening. The tragic incident occurred near the Kahlan area along the Thathri-Kilhotran National Highway.

Local sources told The Chenab Times that Basharat was fishing around 8–9 PM when he accidentally slipped into the river and was swept away by the strong current. A man accompanying him witnessed the incident and immediately alerted nearby residents. The local police, along with teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and volunteers from the Ababeel NGO, quickly launched a rescue operation.

Despite efforts, the search yielded no results due to limited visibility after dark. Authorities confirmed that the rescue operation was called off late Monday night and is set to resume on Tuesday morning.

Basharat Hussain was a fisherman by profession, relying entirely on fishing for his livelihood. His sudden disappearance has left the family and locals in shock, and residents have appealed for intensified search efforts.

River Kalnai, a tributary of the Chenab River, flows from the Bunjwah region and merges with the Chenab near Thathri. The area, known for its rugged terrain and strong river currents, poses challenges for search and rescue operations.
