Monsoon Rains Trigger Floods and School Closures Across India

New Delhi – Heavy monsoon rainfall has caused widespread flooding, school closures, and significant damage across multiple Indian states, with Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh among the hardest hit, according to various reports obtained by The Chenab Times. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for continued heavy rainfall in several regions over the coming days.

In Rajasthan, a heavy rainfall alert covers 26 districts, with schools in Dausa ordered closed due to the deluge. The IMD reported that the monsoon trough is passing through Bikaner, Jaipur, and other areas, with heavy rainfall recorded in Jaipur and Tonk on Wednesday. A red alert has been issued for neighboring Gujarat, signaling extremely heavy rainfall.

Bihar faces a heavy rainfall and thunderstorm alert for 19 districts, including Patna, with winds expected to reach 40 kilometers per hour. Continuous rainfall in Nepal has swollen the Kosi River, causing flood-like conditions in Supaul, as per IMD reports. In Madhya Pradesh, 26 districts, including Bhopal, Indore, and Ujjain, are under a warning for extremely heavy rainfall over the next three days.

In Himachal Pradesh, incessant rains have prompted the closure of all government and private schools and colleges until September 7, 2025, as announced by the state’s Education Department on September 3. The IMD predicted heavy rainfall in Kangra, Kullu, and Sirmaur, with damages exceeding ₹1000 crore and over 150 deaths reported in rain-related incidents.

Punjab is grappling with severe flooding across all 23 districts, with over 35 deaths and 20,000 people rescued. The floods have damaged 175,286 hectares of crops, according to local authorities. In Delhi, the Yamuna River has crossed the danger mark, exacerbating flood risks. The IMD also noted that Jammu and Kashmir are facing widespread devastation due to floods, with rivers and dams overflowing nationwide.
