Saroori Visits Bunjwah, Kishtwar; Demands Rehabilitation and Special Relief Package

KISHTWAR — Senior Congress leader and former J&K minister G. M. Saroori visited rain and landslide-affected families in Bunjwah area of Kishtwar district, on Wednesday, stressing the need for a comprehensive rehabilitation package for victims who have lost everything, according to details received by The Chenab Times.

Saroori met families whose houses and farmlands were destroyed by recent heavy rainfall and landslides. Locals reported hardships, including lack of safe shelter, food, and basic amenities, and expressed disappointment over inadequate relief from authorities.

More than a dozen houses were completely destroyed, and the land has slipped to the extent that it is unsafe for rebuilding or habitation, Saroori said. He noted that the Tehsildar had acknowledged reconstruction at the site is not possible.

Saroori demanded resettlement on the pattern of Chasoti rehabilitation to shift families to safer areas. “The people have lost everything—houses, land, and livelihood. Nothing remains for them. The government must immediately announce a rehabilitation package so that they can begin their lives afresh,” he said.

He criticized token relief like Rs 3,000 or Rs 6,000 and a few kilograms of rice as insufficient. “Such symbolic measures are nothing less than a cruel joke on the miseries of the affected families,” Saroori remarked, urging a special relief package and permanent rehabilitation.
