Bangladesh Tribunal Convicts Ex-PM Sheikh Hasina of Crimes Against Humanity

Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal convicted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of crimes against humanity on Monday, sentencing her to death in absentia for her role in the suppression of 2024 student protests. The protests resulted in up to 1,400 deaths.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, the tribunal also sentenced former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death. Ex-police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun received a life sentence. The convictions stem from evidence of mass killings and tampering with evidence during the crackdown.

The tribunal in Dhaka issued the verdicts following Hasina’s ouster from power. Information was available with The Chenab Times that the decisions have led to unrest in the capital, with reports of vehicles being burned and clashes between protesters and police.

Demonstrators are calling for the removal of interim leader Muhammad Yunus before the scheduled 2026 elections. No further official statements from the tribunal or government were immediately available.
