Landslide Halts Traffic on Jammu-Srinagar Highway at Mehar, Ramban

Traffic movement along the vital Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was suspended late Monday evening due to a significant landslide that blocked both up and down carriageways near Mehar in the Ramban district.

The landslide occurred near the trailer parking area, resulting in a complete cessation of vehicular movement on the crucial route. Authorities acted swiftly to halt traffic at Chanderkote, Jakhiani Kharpura, and Kistwari Pather as a precautionary measure. This action was taken to prevent congestion on the highway and ensure the safety of commuters who might otherwise have been caught in the affected zone.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, officials are currently assessing the extent of the damage and the volume of debris. Efforts are expected to be initiated soon to clear the road and restore normal traffic operations. The exact timeline for the restoration of traffic is not yet available as assessments are ongoing.

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway is a critical arterial road connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India. It is frequently affected by landslides and other natural phenomena, especially during periods of heavy rainfall or snowfall, leading to disruptions in essential supplies and passenger movement.

The Ramban district, situated in the Pir Panjal range, is particularly prone to such geological events due to its mountainous terrain and the nature of the road construction through steep slopes. Landslides in this region often pose significant challenges for traffic management and road maintenance agencies.

In such situations, the Jammu and Kashmir traffic police and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) work in coordination to manage the flow of vehicles and undertake clearance operations. Commuters are often advised to check traffic advisories before undertaking their journeys on this highway.

The suspension of traffic on Monday evening will likely have an impact on the movement of essential goods, including fuel, food supplies, and medical necessities, to Kashmir. Authorities typically prioritize the movement of emergency services and supplies during such closures.

Further updates regarding the clearance operations and the resumption of traffic are expected as the situation develops. Road users are being advised to remain patient and await official announcements regarding the reopening of the highway.
