Patiala School Land Dispute Leaves Students Facing Uncertainty

A land dispute involving the Government Primary School, Nirman Ashram, in Patiala has created an uncertain future for its 52 students. The District Red Cross Society has claimed ownership of the property, where the school has operated since 1963, and is seeking its possession.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the outgoing Patiala Deputy Commissioner, Varjeet Walia, who also serves as the Chairman of the District Red Cross Society, communicated with the District Education Officer (Primary). In a recent letter, the DC relayed a request from the Red Cross secretary for the land to be returned, asserting the organization’s rights over the property.

The Deputy Commissioner directed the District Education Officer (Primary) to investigate the matter and take appropriate action. This development has caused significant concern among parents and teachers, who fear the potential displacement of the school and its students from their current location.

Parents and activists affiliated with local teachers’ organizations have voiced strong opposition to any attempts to vacate the school premises. They are advocating for the continued operation of the school at its existing site.

The District Education Officer (Primary), Salu Mehra, stated that she had discussed the issue with the outgoing Deputy Commissioner. According to Mehra, the DC had previously assured her that classes would continue at the school. However, with the Deputy Commissioner’s transfer, Mehra indicated that she would engage with his successor next week to address the matter.

Mehra further added that the issue would also be discussed with the parents of the students. She confirmed that the school is currently functioning as usual and that no definitive decisions have been made regarding the relocation of the students or the school’s operations. The administration’s next steps are anticipated to bring further clarity to the situation.
