SRINAGAR: Police in the Anantnag district of south Kashmir confiscated 14 vehicles engaged in illegal mining activities between April 12 and April 13. The operation targeted the rampant extraction of minerals without proper authorization.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that a police team from Police Post Dialgam, while conducting a checkpoint at Larkipora Bridge, intercepted the vehicles. The seized fleet comprises eight tippers and six tractors, all found to be transporting minerals without holding the necessary permits.
Following the crackdown, cases have been formally registered at Police Station Anantnag. The authorities have initiated further investigations into the matter to uncover the full extent of the illegal operations and identify all individuals involved.
Illegal mining poses a significant threat to the environment, leading to soil erosion, damage to riverbeds, and disruption of aquatic ecosystems. In regions like Jammu and Kashmir, where river systems are vital for agriculture and local livelihoods, such activities can have particularly severe consequences.
The Jammu and Kashmir administration has been increasingly focusing on curbing illegal mining across the Union Territory.
