The Jammu and Kashmir administration has rolled out a novel QR code-based identification system for all tourism service providers in Pahalgam, a move aimed at enhancing the safety and security of visitors. This initiative, introduced in the popular tourist resort in Anantnag district, seeks to ensure that tourists can easily identify and verify genuine service providers, ranging from pony-ride operators and hawkers to business establishments and external vendors.
The Chenab Times has learned that the implementation follows a devastating attack last year, which targeted tourists and locals. The new system mandates that each service provider undergoes thorough vetting by the police and registration by the authorities, after which they are issued a unique QR code. This code embeds comprehensive personal and professional details about the individual.
Officials explained that tourists can scan these QR codes using their mobile phones to access complete information about the service provider. This verification process is designed to combat fraud, prevent the operation of unauthorized individuals claiming association with the tourism sector, and ultimately build greater trust among visitors. The system aims to ensure that tourists are interacting with legitimate and authorized service providers, thereby strengthening the overall security environment.
The QR codes will contain crucial details such as the service provider’s name, parentage, complete address, mobile number, Aadhaar number, registration details, operational route, and confirmation of police verification. This comprehensive data allows tourists to ascertain the credentials of those offering services before engaging with them.
The tourism stakeholders in Pahalgam have largely welcomed the initiative. They view it as a significant step towards ensuring the authenticity of service providers and bolstering tourist safety, which they believe will lead to increased visitor confidence. Ghulam Hassan, a local service provider, stated that the initiative has been implemented after thorough document verification, with Aadhaar numbers linked and details shared with the local police station. He added that security forces periodically check these QR codes to confirm that only verified and registered service providers are active in the area.
Another service provider, who preferred to remain anonymous, corroborated this, mentioning that all individuals working in Pahalgam, including pony operators, photographers, and vendors, have received unique QR codes following rigorous verification processes. This provider expressed optimism that tourists will feel more secure knowing they have access to complete information about service providers, enhancing both safety and security.
In addition to local stakeholders, vendors from outside Jammu and Kashmir who operate in Pahalgam have also been subjected to thorough police verification. Officials emphasized that this vetting process for external vendors is crucial to prevent any potential security lapses and ensure a safe environment for all tourists visiting the region.
