An army soldier sustained injuries in a landmine explosion near the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday. In a separate incident in the same district, a rusted mortar shell was safely defused by army experts.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the incident occurred when an army column was conducting an area domination patrol in the Balakot region. The injured soldier, identified as an Agniveer, was promptly shifted to a military hospital where his condition has been reported as stable.
The presence of landmines in forward areas along the LoC is attributed to the anti-infiltration obstacle system deployed to prevent cross-border movements. Officials explained that heavy rainfall can sometimes dislodge these mines, leading to accidental explosions.
In a separate operation within Poonch district, army experts successfully defused a rusted mortar shell discovered in Sagra village, located in the Balnoi area. The shell was destroyed through a controlled explosion, ensuring no damage or casualties occurred.
The LoC, which serves as the de facto border between India and Pakistan, is a sensitive region frequently witnessing security-related incidents. Both sides maintain a significant military presence along this volatile frontier.
Incidents involving unexploded ordnance and landmines are not uncommon in border regions of Jammu and Kashmir.
