Mumbai Family of Four Dies After Suspected Food Poisoning from Watermelon

A family of four, including parents and their two daughters, has died in Mumbai under suspicious circumstances, with preliminary investigations pointing towards food poisoning from watermelon. The incident occurred in the Pydhonie area of South Mumbai on April 25. Abdullah Dokadia, 40, his wife Nasreen, 35, and their daughters Ayesha, 16, and Zainab, 13, reportedly fell ill hours after consuming watermelon late at night.

Family’s Tragic Evening

According to details received by The Chenab Times, the family had hosted a gathering at their residence on the night of April 25. They shared a meal of chicken pulao with five relatives, who later departed. Around 1:00 to 1:30 AM on April 26, the family consumed watermelon. Shortly after, by early morning around 5:30 to 6:00 AM, all four began experiencing severe symptoms, including vomiting and loose motions.

Medical Efforts and Deaths

Despite prompt medical attention, first from a local doctor and then at JJ Hospital, their condition rapidly deteriorated. The younger daughter, Zainab, passed away around 10:15 AM on April 26. Her elder sister and mother also succumbed later that day. Abdullah Dokadia was the last to pass away, at approximately 10:30 PM on Sunday.

Police Investigation Underway

Police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) at the JJ Marg Police Station and launched an investigation into the matter. Food samples, including the watermelon consumed by the family, have been collected and sent for forensic testing to the laboratory in Kalina to ascertain the presence of any toxins. Preliminary findings suggest that the relatives who consumed only the chicken pulao did not exhibit any symptoms, reinforcing the suspicion that the watermelon may have been the source of the illness.

Forensic Analysis and Awaiting Reports

The police have also collected biological samples during post-mortem examinations, which have been conducted. However, the final cause of death will be confirmed only after the histopathological reports are received. Officials have stated that while food poisoning is suspected, other possibilities have not been ruled out.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with relatives expressing disbelief at the suddenness of the tragedy. The family was known to have been actively involved in their local community.
