Class XII Student Allegedly Sexually Assaulted and Murdered in Uttar Pradesh; Minor Relative Detained

A Class XII student was allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered in Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh district, with her body discovered hanging from a tree. Police are investigating the incident, suspecting that the accused attempted to stage the crime as a suicide. Three minors, including a distant relative of the victim, are believed to be involved.

According to police reports, the incident occurred when the minor relative allegedly lured the victim to a field on the pretext of meeting. He was reportedly accompanied by two other minors. Police claim that the victim was then sexually assaulted by the relative and his companions. When the girl resisted and raised an alarm, the accused allegedly overpowered her, leading to her death. Subsequently, they are suspected to have hanged her from a tree in an attempt to conceal the crime.

The victim’s family reported her missing the following morning. A search led to the discovery of her body. Police were alerted and have sent the body for a post-mortem examination. Preliminary autopsy findings suggest that the cause of death was smothering and that sexual assault may have occurred. Forensic samples have been collected for further analysis.

During the investigation, police learned that the victim had been in contact with her relative through her father’s mobile phone. One of the minors, identified as a distant relative, has been detained by the police, while efforts are underway to locate the other two individuals involved. Authorities have noted that the suspects come from farming backgrounds and are reportedly uneducated.

This incident brings to light a concerning pattern of crime in Uttar Pradesh, where similar cases involving the sexual assault and murder of young individuals have been reported. In one instance from 2020, a six-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly raped and murdered in Prayagraj, with two youths arrested in connection with the crime. The investigation focused on establishing whether sexual assault had occurred, alongside the murder charges. In another case from June 2023 in Lucknow, a 12-year-old Dalit girl was found dead, and while her family alleged rape and murder, the post-mortem examination ruled out sexual assault, with strangulation identified as the cause of death. The police apprehended a 15-year-old boy in connection with this case.

More recently, in February 2026, a Class XII student in Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh, was reported to have physically and sexually assaulted a female teacher. The incident, which was reportedly captured on CCTV, involved the student attacking the teacher, biting her lips, and forcefully kissing her. The teacher was stated to be in critical condition and undergoing treatment. In a separate incident in Sambhal in April 2026, an FIR was filed against three Class 5 students for allegedly sexually assaulting a six-year-old classmate.

The legal ramifications and societal impact of such crimes continue to be a significant concern. In January 2020, the Hathras gang rape and murder case highlighted the complexities of legal proceedings and societal outrage, culminating in a verdict that convicted one accused for culpable homicide but did not establish rape charges. More recently, in April 2026, the Supreme Court directed the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police to form a special investigation team to probe the alleged rape and murder of a four-year-old girl in Ghaziabad, acknowledging the dissatisfaction of the victim’s parents with the initial police investigation.

These incidents underscore the ongoing challenges in addressing violent crimes against vulnerable populations in the state. Investigations are continuing, and further details are expected as the post-mortem and forensic reports become available.
